Plot summary
Prudence Friedmann is nearly seventeen and living alone in the Paris apartment after her mother's death. Her father stays in Canada longer than planned, and Prudence keeps up the pretense on the phone that her sister Frédérique still shares the flat. Frédérique has moved out. At the mall, Prudence and Marilyne Santamaria, a girl from her school, are strip-searched by security; Prudence hides a bracelet in her underwear and keeps it. Prudence follows Marilyne to a diner, brings her home, and offers her a key to the apartment in exchange for a trip to the motorcycle races at Rungis. A dinner with the Cohen cousins gets in the way, and Prudence's cousin Sonia agrees to sneak out with her, then loses her nerve on the bus.
