Plot summary
Akito Takagi finds a notebook left behind in class by Moritaka Mashiro and sees the drawings inside it. He asks his classmate to become the artist for the stories he writes, and Mashiro turns him down. Mashiro's uncle, Taro Kawaguchi, was a manga artist who died of overwork, and Mashiro had decided against that path. Takagi brings him to see Miho Azuki, the girl Mashiro likes, and tells her about their plan to become manga artists. Azuki says she intends to become a voice actress. Mashiro then proposes they marry once she voices a character in the anime made from their manga. The two begin work under the pen name Muto Ashirogi, hoping for a place in Weekly Shounen Jump.

- When the cast of Bakuman was announced, many people thought Takeru Satoh and Ryūnosuke Kamiki should have swapped roles. Director Hitoshi Ōne had decided the manga otaku Kamiki would play the writer, and the stoic Satoh the artist who could show his heart honestly.
- Hitoshi Ōne at first turned down the offer to direct the live-action Bakuman, feeling a manga about Weekly Shōnen Jump made inside Weekly Shōnen Jump would lose its point in another medium. Re-reading the series changed his mind when he saw it as a coming-of-age story at heart.
- For the part of Taro Kawaguchi, Hitoshi Ōne wanted an actor who could actually draw. He cast Kankurō Kudō after seeing him portray Shigeru Mizuki in GeGeGe no Nyōbō.
- Sakanaction frontman Ichiro Yamaguchi sent Hitoshi Ōne about 10 demos after reading the script, and the demos were tried against footage from the film. Unlike most directors, Ōne edits his films to the music instead of fitting the music to the edited footage.
- Takeru Satoh and Ryūnosuke Kamiki ad-libbed parts of Bakuman, including the lines their characters speak about what kind of manga they want to create when they first team up, and Takagi's reference to Kyūkyoku!! Hentai Kamen.
- Takeshi Obata, illustrator of the original Bakuman manga, drew some of the manga manuscripts that appear in the film and the images seen on the blackboard in the final scene, after Hitoshi Ōne interviewed him for the screenplay.
