Plot summary
Matthias Breecher, a Union Army veteran now working as a Pinkerton detective, takes a commission from Senator Benjamin Burke to hunt the worst Confederate war criminals. He begins in Mississippi, where General Corbin Dandridge is his first target. Riding west, he crosses paths with the bounty hunter Harlan Red, who says the two of them will clash one day. His next name is Reginald Cooke, who is dying of pneumonia on his farm and is cared for by his daughter Sarah. Breecher chooses not to shoot or hang the old man, and instead settles in at the homestead to wait for the disease to run its course. The days he spends there draw him closer to Sarah.
