Plot summary
Lisa Piper is eleven and lives in Cincinnati. Since her father died she has grown up fast, cooking for her mother and looking after her siblings, and she refuses to be treated as a child. Mary, her older sister, works in a toy shop whose owner is furious when everyone leaves early ahead of a Christmas Eve blizzard. Mary and her boyfriend Jack drive Lisa and their friend George home, the snowy roads cause a crash, and Lisa is thrown from the car. She arrives in Toyland just before Mary Contrary is to wed Barnaby Barnicle, though Mary loves Jack Nimble. Lisa interrupts the wedding, and she and her new friends learn that Barnaby plans to take over Toyland. They ask the Toymaster for help, and he can give it only if Lisa truly believes in toys.
