Plot summary
Sharafat Karim Ayna lives in Old Dhaka, where he takes care of a drama school for children. Neighbors assume that his absences of two or three months mean work as a cook on a ship. The absences are jail terms: criminals pay him to serve their sentences, and Gausul, who runs a local studio, passes him the orders. Businessman Kuddus Siddiqui, charged over the ill treatment of a woman named Tanisha, asks his lawyer for someone to take his place, and Ayna studies Kuddus until he can pass for him. Police then carry out a swap on the road to prison, and Ayna goes inside as Kuddus. Reporter Saber Hossain of the Daily Sakal Bela hears Tanisha's account and begins to ask questions. In the same neighborhood, Ayna meets Hridi.
