Plot summary
Sengadu, a village near Puliyankudi, grows prized cotton, and Robert, a British officer, works its poor people hard; his son Justin, a womaniser, carries off girls. Paraman keeps his distance from the villagers, blaming them for his mother's death years ago, and stays close to the Zamindar, who takes Robert's orders to keep his wealth and power. The villagers hate the Zamindar for it. Thenmalli, his daughter, lives shut inside his palace, and apart from Paraman nobody in Sengadu knows she exists, a precaution against Justin and other British officers. Paraman is fond of her and says nothing of it. The Zamindar arranges a marriage for her with another Zamindar's son. India gains independence, and Robert, called to a meeting by his superiors, makes sure the village hears none of the news.
