Plot summary
In the late 1970s, Sivasaami, a Dalit farmer in the village of Thekkoor, lives with his wife Pachaiyammal and their sons Velmurugan and Chidambaram. Narasimhan, a wealthy landlord from the neighboring village of Vadakoor, wants the family's three-acre farm to build a factory and asks them to sell it. Velmurugan, the elder son, refuses. Narasimhan's sons assault Pachaiyammal in retaliation. Velmurugan answers by badly injuring the attackers, and he is sent to prison. Sivasaami appeals to Narasimhan to have his son released, and the landlord sets a condition: Sivasaami must kneel in front of each person of the upper-caste village to atone. His younger son Chidambaram then kills Narasimhan, and Sivasaami takes Chidambaram and runs.
