Plot summary
Caroline Edh was a speed skater before the war, and now she wears a soldier's uniform. At a base, Colonel Raad briefs Edh and the other recruits on their task: travel over the ice of the Stockholm Archipelago to a research station named Ödö and hand over a set of canisters that, he says, could turn the war around. Edh calls the plan suicidal, until she is told that her daughter Vanja has been found in a refugee camp, and she agrees to go. The base comes under attack, and the group sets out onto the ice with Nylund, a lieutenant, carrying cargo whose contents they were never told.
