Plot summary
Overgård's days inside the Arctic Circle follow one routine: he tends his fishing lines, maps the ground and hand-cranks the distress beacon that may bring a rescue. A polar bear raids the fish he has stored. A helicopter answers the beacon and tries to land, but it goes down; the pilot dies and the passenger, a young woman, is badly hurt and cannot wake. Overgård treats her wound and carries her back to his plane, where she answers him only by squeezing his hand. In the wreckage he finds food, a stove, medical equipment, a sled and a map, along with a photograph of the woman, the pilot and a child. The map shows a seasonal refuge several days' walk from him, so when her condition does not improve he decides to drag her there on the sled.
