Plot summary
McMurdo Station and Scott Base share Ross Island, and the everyday workers there keep both stations and their machinery going so that scientists can carry out their research. Among the people interviewed are a helicopter pilot, a fireman and a firehouse dispatcher, a cook, a mechanic, a storekeeper, a finance person, an administrative person and an operations manager. From October to February the sun stays up around the clock, and the winter that follows brings four months of darkness. Time-lapse photography follows the changing seasons and the Antarctic landscape, shot with camera systems built to endure the deep cold. Also covered is T3 syndrome, in which the brain's T3 hormone is reassigned to the body's muscles to protect against extreme cold, along with the community's shared life, including a New Year's party called Ice Stock.
