Plot summary
Anna Christofferson writes from Minnesota to the father she has not seen in fifteen years, and he is eager to have her: Chris Christofferson drinks heavily and skippers a coal barge in New York, and he pictures his daughter decent and settled. The young woman who comes to the barge has spent years in the dregs of society and guards the truth of them. When Chris pulls Matt Burke and two other sailors from the sea one night, Anna and Matt fall in love. Matt proposes, and she holds back, unable to bring herself to tell him where her life has been.
