Plot summary

Lidiya Vasilyevna, a former circus actress, comes to a sanatorium on the Riga seaside for treatment. Rodion Nikolayevich serves as the head doctor of that sanatorium, and both of them are lonely people of about sixty years old. Their first meeting is a conflict. She has violated the sanatorium regime within days of her arrival, and he calls her in about it. The lady proves difficult, with a character of her own, and the doctor is offended at first. The offense passes, the two become friends, and a mutual sympathy grows between them. He invites her out to a restaurant.
