Plot summary

Adam teaches at a university, where his course takes a feminist line, and he is estranged from his father, the Oscar-winning actor Atticus Smith, whose heavy drinking and lecherous manner he finds repulsive. A heart attack forces Atticus to travel across the country by car to reach his daughter's wedding, and Adam comes along. Adam once testified against Atticus in his parents' divorce, and Atticus's unfaithfulness to Adam's mother is part of why the two men are at odds. Along the route they meet a series of characters and are drawn into misadventures, among them a meeting with a former romantic interest of Atticus.
