Plot summary
Two of Andrew Sterling's new neighbors on a Massachusetts resort island, the Gillmans, mistake the black playwright for a burglar and telephone the police. Officers surround the house and open fire when Andrew steps outside to silence his car alarm. Reporters gather, and Chief Tolliver phones Andrew to apologize. To avoid bad publicity, he offers a jailed thief, Amos Odell, a way out of town: break into the house, take the writer hostage and give himself up. Amos enters with a shotgun and ties Andrew up, and Andrew takes him for an assassin sent because of his published views on white America.
