Plot summary
Mortgage banks across California are on a hiring frenzy in a boom that employs roughly a fifth of the state's workers. The hiring comes late in the sub-prime boom, and the trade offers Jason Kelley, a former college football hero with no money, a shot at stardom. Devin Weiss, a hotshot mortgage broker, brings him into the business of financing other people's dreams. Weiss tells him that winners in the trade cut corners, and that appraisers and bond traders all do it. Jason sets his moral compass aside, and the boom carries him to a mortgage brokers convention in Las Vegas.
