Biography

Akon is a Senegalese-American singer, songwriter and record producer who was born in St. Louis and spent much of his childhood in Senegal, where he learned to play several instruments. He joined the Refugee Camp, the Fugees' extended musical family, and recorded a single in 1996 that led to a deal with Elektra Records, though it fell through. He broke through with his 2004 debut album Trouble and its singles Locked Up and Lonely. His second album, Konvicted (2006), reached number two on the Billboard 200, and its singles Smack That and I Wanna Love You both earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. He founded the labels Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, signed acts such as Lady Gaga and T-Pain, and wrote or produced for performers including Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. He made his acting debut in the 2012 film Black November and appeared in American Heist (2014) alongside Hayden Christensen and Adrien Brody.
