Plot summary

An Apache attack leaves a cavalry squad short-handed, so Sergeant Matt Blake leads the survivors toward their fort, guarding a prisoner named Corbin and the repeating rifles he had hoped to sell to the Apache. On the trail they meet men from a Texas cattle drive, former Confederate soldiers under Sam Prescott, among them Keith Williams, who hates northerners and has to be held back from shooting Blake. The Apache hand over Teresa Santos, a young woman who survived an attack on a nearby ranch, then use the moment to run off the party's horses. Blake and Prescott decide to travel together on foot toward Cimarron Pass, carrying the rifles. Judge Stanfield argues for trading the rifles away; Blake refuses.
