Plot summary
Sasha Tran spends much of her childhood at the neighboring home of Marcus Kim in San Francisco, where his mother Judy teaches her to cook while Sasha's Vietnamese parents work at their store. The friendship lasts into their teens and ends after Judy dies in an accident. Sixteen years later Sasha is a celebrity chef engaged to the restaurateur Brandon Choi, while Marcus lives in the city with his widowed father, dates Jenny, and plays in a band that performs only in his own neighborhood. When Brandon postpones their wedding again, Sasha calls off the engagement and returns to the Bay Area to open a restaurant. Marcus and his father come to fit air conditioning in the house where she is staying.

- Keanu Reeves was nearly not cast as himself: Randall Park said everyone thought it would be impossible to get him, so they tried to think of other people, with alternatives including Tony Leung, Mark Dacascos, M. Night Shyamalan and Paul Giamatti.
- Randall Park wrote "I Punched Keanu Reeves," which plays over the end credits, as a tribute to Reeves, and had to email him for permission to use the lyrics; Reeves was totally down and even gave suggestions.
- Randall Park's rap persona draws on his own earlier career in the 1990s Bay Area hip-hop group Ill Again, and his film band is called Hello Peril, a play on the term "yellow peril"; rapper Lyrics Born appears as a band member.
- Keanu Reeves was in the middle of filming John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum when he flew into San Francisco specifically to shoot his two scenes, then returned to New York.
