Plot summary

Dick Proenneke retires at fifty and travels to a remote stretch of Alaska at the base of the Aleutian Peninsula, land that is now Lake Clark National Park. He selects a homestead site and raises a log cabin there entirely on his own. He shoots color footage himself, and that film follows the cabin going up. His first year in the area passes in day-to-day work and in the changing seasons, as he tries to make a living alone in the wild. Weeks and sometimes months pass without another person nearby.
