Plot summary
Canan Yılmaz, twenty-two, is pregnant by her British boyfriend David and has not told her family. She tells how her grandfather Hüseyin arrived in Germany in the 1960s as a guest worker, the million-and-first to come. Her grandmother Fatma collects new German passports for herself and Hüseyin, who calls them a scrap of paper and worries the family will lose its culture. Cenk, Canan's six-year-old cousin, speaks no Turkish, and at school he is picked for neither the German nor the Turkish soccer team. At a family meal Fatma presents the passports, and Hüseyin announces that he has purchased a summer house in Turkey and wants everyone to travel there to renovate it. The idea is unwelcome and causes heated discussion.
