Plot summary
Anna is a French actress studying in New York. She shares a loft with two roommates, a wealthy woman and an opera singer. At the Metropolitan Museum she meets Mark, a Wall Street broker who noticed her resemblance to a portrait by Johannes Vermeer and followed her from room to room before coming up to introduce himself. Their meeting begins a peculiar romance, set in late 1980s New York, where the art market and the stock market are both booming. Around the two of them run the tangents of the arts world and of the market, along with the conflicts of the loft, and both stay wrapped up in their own separate lives.
