Plot summary

Nan Goldin is a photographer and activist whose pictures record the HIV/AIDS crisis and LGBT subcultures. Her photographs and archival footage from her life appear beside the protests she leads. In 2017, after her own addiction to OxyContin, she founds P.A.I.N., Prescription Addiction Intervention Now, which presses museums and other arts institutions over their ties to the Sackler family. The family owns Purdue Pharma, which she blames for the opioid epidemic, and the group's demonstrations include its first protest, in 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Temple of Dendur, and actions at the Louvre and the Guggenheim. Goldin narrates, and associates including the journalist Patrick Radden Keefe and the P.A.I.N. member Megan Kapler also speak.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed became only the second documentary ever to win the Golden Lion, the top prize of the Venice Film Festival, following Sacro GRA in 2013.
Nan Goldin and two other activists spent two years filming P.A.I.N.'s protests, intending to make a documentary about the group, before Goldin brought the footage to a production company, which suggested Laura Poitras to direct. Goldin was skeptical, saying she thought she would not interest Poitras "because I don't have any state secrets."
Director Laura Poitras publicly criticized the Venice and Toronto film festivals for screening In Her Hands, produced by Hillary Clinton; Poitras said she was "alarmed" by Clinton's presence, citing Clinton's involvement in the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Laura Poitras went beyond Nan Goldin's original idea to make a fuller portrait of her life and career, including the suicide of Goldin's sister and Goldin's drug use and sex work, which Goldin had never previously publicized.
