Competitive air guitar takes hold in the United States when the first official national championship is staged above a New York strip club. Contestants are judged on technical accuracy, stage presence and airness. The contest moves from New York to Los Angeles and on to the 2003 Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland, which draws thousands of fans each August and where the United States has been missing from the field.
