Plot summary

Zach Wade, thirteen, and his sister Hannah, twelve, are coping with their parents' separation. They have an Alaskan Malamute named Chinook. The children and Chinook are traveling into the wilderness to meet their father, Robert Wade, a mining company vice president. Their mother Susan sees them off at the dock, and the seaplane takes off. The pilot, Charlie Foster, is friendly, and the children watch lakes, rivers and trees pass below. The engine sputters and bangs, and black smoke pours out. Charlie tells them to brace for a crash landing. The plane comes down among the trees. Zach, Hannah, Charlie and Chinook survive the impact, but the radio is dead and Charlie is barely conscious. Zach and Hannah gather what they can and set out with Chinook to find help. Robert, told the plane is overdue, begins coordinating a search.
