Biography

Vladimir Basov was a Soviet actor and director, born in Urazov, Kursk province. He studied at the Soviet State Institute of Cinema, where Mikhail Romm and Sergei Yutkevich were among his teachers, and he graduated as a film director in 1952. From then until 1987 he worked as a director for Mosfilm Studios in Moscow. He rose to fame as Bruno, the central figure in the war drama Shchit i mech (1968), a film he directed himself, and he was known for supporting parts, among them the Floor Polisher in the 1964 film Walking the Streets of Moscow. His other directing work included the television movie Opasnyy povorot (1972) and the series Dni Turbinykh (1976), adapted from a book by Mikhail A. Bulgakov. In 1983 he was named People's Actor of the USSR, and in 1982 he received the State Prize of Russia. He died in 1987.
