Plot summary
Jericho Jackson, a Harvard Law graduate and a star athlete in his hometown, was a celebrated lieutenant in the Detroit police department. A case he headed involving Sean Dellaplane, the criminal son of auto manufacturer Peter Dellaplane, led to his demotion to sergeant nearly two years before, collapsed his marriage and turned the public against him. He still works as a Detroit sergeant, and his attention to Dellaplane's business brings him into conflict with his commander, Captain Armbruster. Union officials tied to the Dellaplane company keep dying. Sydney Ash, a lounge singer and heroin addict whom Dellaplane supports financially, gives Jackson her help.
