Plot summary
Ace Ventura is a private detective in Miami who specializes in rescuing animals, and the Miami Police Department mocks him. Snowflake, the bottlenose dolphin that serves as the Miami Dolphins' mascot, is taken from the team's stadium. Publicist Melissa Robinson brings Ace in to recover the dolphin before the Super Bowl. An amber stone found in Snowflake's tank points to Ronald Camp, a wealthy collector of exotic animals; Ace searches the grounds during a party at Camp's house and dodges a shark.

- Rick Moranis was approached to play Ace Ventura and said no, Judd Nelson and Alan Rickman were considered, and the part was nearly rewritten as a woman for Whoopi Goldberg. David Alan Grier also turned it down, later saying he thought the script was bad.
- Jim Carrey got the part only after producer James G. Robinson noticed him on the sketch show In Living Color. Lauren Holly turned down the role of publicist Melissa Robinson, which went to Courteney Cox instead.
- Jim Carrey personally picked the death metal band Cannibal Corpse to play "Hammer Smashed Face" on screen. The band had a European tour booked, so the crew moved its own filming schedule to fit them in, and the appearance widened their audience well beyond their usual fans.
