Plot summary
An epidemic of a mysterious illness closed Abigail Foster's city off from the outside world many years ago. Her father was among the sick, taken away when she was six, and she has been without him since. When she goes against the authorities to search for him, she discovers that magic runs through the city, and that magical powers are stirring inside her. The harder she tries to keep them hidden, the stronger they grow, until agents of the Special Department begin to hunt her. She has to leave her home and set out on a journey of her own.
