Plot summary
A speech at a World Bank conference announces that Mexico has done away with poverty. Juan Pérez has no home and loves Rosita, who is as poor as he is; he promises her a house, a car and a family. On a rainy night he needs somewhere to sleep, slips into the rear entrance of a stylish office building and settles into an unlocked office. The cleaner arrives, and he climbs onto a platform outside; the window closes, leaving him stranded. A crowd gathers below, convinced he means to jump. Firefighters bring him down, and journalists ask whether globalization and neoliberal economic policy played a part in what he did. El Mercurio uses the incident to fill its morning edition, printing that he was protesting poverty, and the Secretary of Economy takes the blame.
