Plot summary
In 1973 a civic-military dictatorship rules Uruguay, and its National Army is fighting a guerrilla war against the leftist Tupamaros. Three of the group's members are taken as hostages: José Mujica, along with Mauricio Rosencof and Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro. Killing them is impossible because of international pressure, so the military chooses mental torment instead, holding them in a government prison and moving them between military bases over the following years. They live under petty rules and abuse, including solitary confinement. Their families press the military chief for a brief reunion on the prison grounds, which he allows on condition that the men stay silent.
