Plot summary
Steve Blackburn works in insurance and lives in London with his wife Gloria, who is away visiting her parents in the States, and their two children. Vickie Allessio, a recent divorcée with two children of her own, earns her living copying designs for a knockoff fashion house. The two keep crossing paths in London before either knows who the other is. When they finally meet, Steve is direct about wanting an affair, and Vickie is direct about her terms: nothing cheap, and preferably a weekend somewhere warm. Steve arranges a week of business in Málaga and talks her into spending it at the resort of Marbella instead. One problem after another threatens to derail the trip.

- Glenda Jackson said the director Melvin Frank approached her after seeing her in the "Antony and Cleopatra" sketch on the BBC's The Morecambe & Wise Show in 1971. After the role won her an Oscar, Eric Morecambe sent her a telegram reading, "Stick with us and we will get you another one".
- The lead role of Steve was originally offered to Cary Grant, with a promise to rewrite the script to play up the age difference between Steve and Vickie, but Grant opted to remain in retirement. He stayed connected anyway: the film was produced by Fabergé's Brut Productions, and Grant was on the Fabergé board of directors.
- Roger Moore was also offered the lead role before dropping out to star in Live and Let Die, his first appearance as James Bond. He did, however, have a hand in the production of this film.
