Plot summary
In the Magway region of Myanmar, Htwe Tin and Thein Shwe are a married couple who have drilled their own pit beside their house and pull oil from it with their bare hands. Nothing about the work is regulated, and a barrel comes out every few days. Fields like theirs are scattered across the country, part of an industry that ranks among the oldest in the world, and many families have abandoned crop cultivation to sell what they pump from the ground. The couple's youngest son is the center of their ambition: they want him to succeed and to break the cycle of poverty.
