Plot summary

The white Alba truffle grows in the forests of Piedmont, in Northern Italy, and has resisted every attempt at cultivation, even by modern science. It is a pungent and rarified mystery that the wealthiest patrons in the world want, and even the most resourceful modern excavators cannot find it. The only ones who can dig it up are a small circle of canines and the elders who accompany them, men of seventy or eighty with walking sticks, who search at night and avoid leaving clues for others. Their small group drives a buying market that spans the globe, and the trade is threatened by greed and outside influences.
