Plot summary
In 1994, Inez de la Paz comes back to the Brooklyn block where she once stayed in a shelter, and sees six-year-old Terry on the street with the other children from his foster home. After Terry is hospitalized, she visits him in secret, and when he says he wants to live with her, she takes him out of the hospital and brings him to Harlem, the neighborhood of her childhood. For a time the two sleep wherever she can rent a room, until her job at a nursing home pays enough for an apartment. She obtains forged papers so Terry can enroll in school, and she marries Lucky, a thief she once dated, who promises to care for the boy.
