Plot summary
Friedrich Zeitz, a newly graduated engineer of modest origins, takes a job at Karl Hoffmeister's steelworks in 1912. Karl is impressed by his knowledge and dedication, and Friedrich rises through the ranks. When Karl's health declines and keeps him at home, Friedrich goes to the house for briefings and relays them back to the works, where he becomes acquainted with Charlotte, Karl's younger wife. He also tutors Karl's young son Otto, and Karl asks him to move in with the family for business. Friedrich struggles with his feelings for Charlotte and does not know they are returned. Just as the two admit their attraction, Friedrich must travel to Mexico on Karl's behalf, and they promise to be together when he comes back.
