Plot summary
The A.P.E.X. units, or Advanced Prototype Exploration units, are robot probes that scientists in 2073 use to explore the past, and Nicholas Sinclair is one of the project's scientists. When a probe travels to the year 1973, the trip goes wrong: a deadly virus is let loose in that year, and the project's automatic countermeasures activate. Attack robots travel back through time to wipe out the virus carriers. The 1973 the project reaches is no longer the past it meant to study. It is an alternate timeline of plague, and its exhausted people fight a running battle against the machines that come at them from the future. Sinclair is thrust into the middle of it.
