Plot summary
In Springwood, the teenagers Nancy Holbrook, Quentin Smith, Kris Fowles, Jesse Braun and Dean Russell all live on the same street and begin having the same dream. A burned man in a tattered sweater, a glove of blades on his right hand, comes after them in it, and waking is the only way out. Dean falls asleep at the diner where Nancy works and is attacked by the man. Kris finds a photograph of herself with Dean as children and cannot remember knowing him before high school. She starts having nightmares of the burned man and refuses to sleep, and her ex-boyfriend Jesse Braun stays with her.

- Initially the studio wanted to cast an unknown for the role of Freddy Krueger, but it was Haley's performance in Little Children (2006) that impressed Emmerich enough to cast the actor against the original intentions.
- Bayer and producers Form and Fuller managed to acquire the screen test Haley gave as Rorschach for Watchmen; after viewing it, Bayer said it "blew [his] mind", and that he knew Haley would be able to create a believable character who was a psychopath "with a burned face and a claw."

The writers developed the character to be a child molester, something that Craven had wanted to do originally in 1984 but changed to a child killer instead.- The school board president was initially apprehensive about the deal, disliking the idea of the studio filming "scenes of violence" at the schools, and agreed only once she was assured that no one would be killed during the pool scenes.
- The Platinum Dunes producers took the view that a film not initially conceived as 3D should not be converted to 3D, and Fuller and Form fought the studio to keep the remake in 2D.
