Plot summary
Postwar Tokyo, and prices keep climbing. Tokiko Amamiya, twenty-nine, rents a room in a working-class district, earning what she can from dressmaking and selling her belongings while her husband Shuichi is still abroad. Her friend Akiko, a former workmate, helps her along. Orie, a neighborhood woman with ties to the sex trade, buys one of Tokiko's kimonos and repeatedly suggests Tokiko sell herself; Tokiko refuses every time. Then Hiroshi, her four-year-old son, comes down with colitis and is admitted to a hospital. He recovers, but the bills are more than she can pay, and Tokiko goes to Orie and spends one night as a prostitute at a place far out of town. Akiko, learning of it, scolds her. Shuichi comes home at last, and Tokiko, unable to lie to him, tells him what she did.
