Plot summary
Zoe Jensen, a teacher by profession, has left her young son with her mother in Omaha and moved to San Francisco after her divorce. No permanent teaching jobs are open, so she takes temporary office work and, in her free hours, sings with a church choir. The choir has just taken on a retired conductor, Ephraim Adams, who tells the members that music is hard work and that anyone wanting a relaxing pastime should look elsewhere; he means to perform Handel's Messiah at Christmas. Among the singers are Muriel, who befriends Zoe, and Wendell, a student whose grandmother works nights to keep him in school. Auditions for the solo parts are open to all, and Adams drives the group toward a standard it has not yet reached.
