Plot summary
With France under Nazi control and Britain fighting on alone, Churchill approves a new secret service, the Special Operations Executive, and its recruiter Vera Atkins is told to bring women into espionage. Virginia Hall, an American who lost a leg in a hunting accident, has been refused a place in the diplomatic corps by her own government and works as a clerk in London until she meets Atkins at a party in early 1941. Noor Inayat Khan, a radio operator and a Sufi pacifist, is recruited too. At a Scottish estate the trainees learn sabotage and survival, and Noor and Virginia, who know each other only as Madeline and Bridgett, become roommates. Virginia names her wooden leg Cuthbert, passes the harder course, and consents to be the agency's first woman agent.
