Plot summary
The puppy flees a commercial breeding facility where animals are caged and mistreated, and makes a long journey to the Chinmaya colony in Mysore, where Dharma lives alone. He works at a factory, drinks heavily, keeps to himself and watches Charlie Chaplin films, having withdrawn since a road accident in which a dog appeared suddenly and his parents and sister died. A neighborhood music festival terrifies the puppy. Dharma storms out and smashes the band's instruments, and the animal begins trailing him, eating what he discards and sheltering in his trash bin. When a vehicle hits her, he carries her to a veterinary clinic, and Dr. Ashwin, who treats her, asks him to foster her until an adopter is found. Despite local rules against pets, he files an application for a dog license.
