Plot summary
Cara Harding is a forensic psychiatrist. On Christmas Eve, unknown attackers kill her husband as they walk home from church. Her father brings her a patient named Adam, who is thought to have multiple personality disorder. Adam shows the physical traits of his other personalities. The father first tells her about one of them, David Burnberg, who needs a wheelchair. Cara learns that David was a real person, a paraplegic murdered long ago. She visits his mother, Mrs. Bernburg, who agrees to meet Adam to help cure him.
