Plot summary
Hanna and Simon have been married for twenty years, a relationship both still value even though it has settled into habit. Simon learns that he has testicular cancer and undergoes surgery and chemotherapy, and he is told he should still be able to father children. On the night of the operation, Hanna spends the evening with a man named Adam. After Simon leaves the hospital, he and Hanna decide to marry at last. Around the same time, Simon encounters Adam at a swimming pool, and the two begin an affair. Adam does not know that the two people he is seeing are married to each other.
