Plot summary
On the Kazakh steppes an unwritten law holds that anything falling from the sky belongs to whoever finds it, and the villagers near Baikonur live by it, gathering the debris that comes down from the space station. Iskander, the village radio operator, is nicknamed Gagarin for his love of Baikonur and outer space; he follows the flights of the French astronaut Julie Mahé on television. Nazira, among the last young people left in the village, hides her love for Iskander behind unconventional behavior. When Julie's capsule crashes on the steppe and she loses her memory, Iskander tells her that the two of them are engaged.
