Plot summary
In the Ural Mountains, the Yagahl hunt woolly mammoths, and the herds come less often. Old Mother, the tribe's shaman, foretells that four-legged demons will arrive after the last hunt, and that Evolet, a blue-eyed girl raised among them, will marry the hunt's champion and lead the tribe into a new life. The chief hunter leaves to seek another way, entrusting the White Spear and his son D'Leh to Tic'Tic. D'Leh grows up loving Evolet and swears he will never forget her. When the mammoths return, he hunts under Tic'Tic and kills one, winning the White Spear and Evolet, then gives up both, judging his triumph more luck than courage. The next day, riders on horseback raid the camp and carry off Evolet and other Yagahl. D'Leh, Tic'Tic, Ka'Ren and the boy Baku set out after them.

- Director Roland Emmerich wanted to film the whole picture in Africa, but a ban on shooting a particular helicopter scene there forced the production to move that footage to New Zealand instead.
- Rendering a single frame of the computer-generated prehistoric animals took sixteen hours, so the effects team cut the fur on half the CGI models to save time, since the director felt viewers could not tell the difference.
- 10,000 BC became the first film of 2008 to pass the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office.
- Dialect coach Brendan Gunn invented about half a dozen fictional languages for the tribes in the film, improvising their sound informally with actor Steven Strait and weaving in real African dialects, including Namibia's Oshiwambo language.
- The film's woolly mammoths were designed from elephants and mammoth fossils, while its saber-toothed cat was built from tigers and ligers (a lion-tiger hybrid), with the cat's growls created from real tiger and lion vocalizations.
