Plot summary
Tim is a timid 16-year-old in grade 11 who lives with his father since his mother died young; he once ran well, coached by his mother, and stopped when she died. For five years classmates, Jeff Roy first among them, have bullied him, and he will not report them or confide in his father. He is close to Francis, a gay classmate, and drawn to him, though he keeps it quiet; Jennifer, a schoolmate, takes his case to heart. Mr. Sullivan, the running coach, pushes him to race again, and Tim joins a sports club to qualify for the Nationals in the 800 meters, where 1:54 is the time he needs.
