Plot summary
The governor has sent Dave Harmon to Yuma to serve as the territory's United States Marshal. Marshals posted there before him have been run out of town. Years earlier his wife was raped and his son killed, and the killers were described only as men in army uniforms. He takes postings near army posts, looking for them. On his first day Harmon jails one of the King brothers for a stagecoach robbery and shoots the other in self-defense in the saloon. He is told the dead man was a brother of Arch King, a powerful cattleman. That night someone breaks into the jail, frees the surviving brother and shoots him with a gun from Harmon's office, and the town holds Harmon responsible. Arch King gives him a chance to prove he was not the one who fired.
