Plot summary
In 1987, as Taiwan's martial law ends, Chang Jia-han, called A-han, plays in the school band at an all-boys Catholic high school, led by Father Oliver, a Canadian priest who tells the students to live in the moment. A new transfer student, Wang Po-te, nicknamed Birdy, joins the band, and the two become best friends, trading pranks and long glances. A trip to Taipei to mourn President Chiang Ching-kuo brings them closer, and A-han's feelings for Birdy deepen. Homophobia surrounds them: A-han watches classmates assault a gay student, and police detain a protester on a bridge. When the school admits girls, Birdy spends time with a female classmate, Wu Ruo-fei, called Ban-ban, which leaves A-han jealous.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu based the film on his own true story, and in reality the two men never met again, as in the movie.
- The film pays homage to Taiwanese gay rights activist Chi Chia-wei: the protester A-han and Birdy see detained on a Taipei overhead bridge carries a sign reading "Homosexuality is not a disease!", and his outfit, sign and the protest location match Chi's real-life demonstrations.
