Plot summary
Anarchy 99, a Russian group with a biochemical weapon called Silent Night in its hands, draws the attention of the National Security Agency. Agent Augustus Gibbons wants an operative with no ties to the American government, someone the group will not recognize, and he finds him in Xander Cage, an extreme sports professional facing prison for unlawful protesting. Cage takes the deal. He stops a staged armed robbery, survives a test drop into a Colombian firefight, and lands in Prague as part of a small team that includes the Czech agent Milan Sova. At a party held by Anarchy 99 he picks Sova out as a police officer, which earns him the trust of the group's leader, Yorgi, and the notice of Yelena, Yorgi's girlfriend and lieutenant.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Vin Diesel's stunt double, Harry O'Connor, was killed on April 4, 2002, when he struck a pillar of the Palacky Bridge in Prague while parasailing during a second take of an action scene; his safer first take is the one used in the finished film, which is dedicated to him.
- Sony put up a large Hollywood billboard advertising the film in August 2001, before a single page of the script had even been written.
- Vin Diesel did many of his own stunts, and director Rob Cohen said he did more than he should have, but less than he wanted to; during the avalanche scene Diesel fell, landed head first and was not moving, leaving Cohen worried his star might have broken his neck.
- Before Vin Diesel was cast in the lead role of Xander Cage, it is believed that the actor Eric Bana turned the part down.
- XXX picked up a Razzie Award nomination for Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie, but lost that prize to Jackass: The Movie.
