Plot summary
Tony lives in a London apartment with his mother Rachel, her American boyfriend Joe Daniels and the au pair Analise Mercier. Three years earlier, while Sam and Tony were playing outside the family farm, a bright light took Sam away. Sam now comes back, picks Tony up from school, and is spotted by Rachel. He says he cannot remember anything from the years he was gone, and Joe does not trust him. Sam moves in with the family, and Rachel is unsure how she feels about having both men there. Tony has recurring nightmares about waking covered in someone else's blood, and Sam frightens him.

- When Xtro was released on home video in 1983 it was subject to a prosecution case under British obscenity laws, yet unlike many other "video nasties" it had been passed uncut by the BBFC with an 18 certificate for theatrical release.
- The creature was first conceived as a faceless rubber suit; sketch artist Christopher Hobbs helped sort out the visual concepts, and the design was changed to a man on his hands and knees, with a mime hired to perform the strange scuttle of the walk.
- Producer Mark Forstater brought in two extra writers, Robert Smith and Iain Cassie, saying the plot was kept intact but the new writers "went off into weird and wonderful tangents".
